Winchester Judo Club was started by Liz Viney MBE in 1956 and is one of the oldest clubs in Great Britain.
Elizabeth Viney MBE was the founder and driving force behind Winchester judo club (started in January 1956, in local school and church halls, before finding a permanent place to practice in St Peter’s Hall on Chesil Street. It remained there until September 1969 when it relocated to the Lido sports centre, which is still its home), becoming the first ever lady Dan grade (black belt) in Hampshire. Liz was one of the leading lights in women’s judo and went on to become the British women’s team manager.
We run both junior and adult classes. Over the years we have produced many county, area and national medalists. We also cater for people who are just happy keeping fit and learning new skills.
